She’s in an Otherworld
I’m the weird girl.
You know; the one every kid in class avoids, just in case what I’ve got is catching.
Not that I care.
See, there are worlds other than this one.
Worlds we pass on to when we die.
Worlds, even, where we exist before we’re even born.
They’re the worlds of the Nyxt.
And, if I don’t handle things right, they’re about to declare war on the living.
Wyrd Girl edition by Jon Jacks Children eBooks
From the blurbs, jacket description, simpering nymph cover, and first few chapters it looked like this was just going to be another story about a high school loner who is dismissed as "weird", but after a lot of angst and drama finds that she does have some paranormal talents. That can be O.K., I guess, but it doesn't matter because it turns out that this book is much more clever, twisty, and well written than that. Our heroine is smart, feisty, a little snarky, and up to challenges. No moody angst here. No drama. No high school loner scenes; indeed no high school scenes at all. Instead we get an independent young woman who is comfortable with who she is, who cons her way into a job and then finds out that she has unwittingly placed herself in the midst of a simmering conflict between those who guard the world of the living and the spirits who take care of the world of the dead. She clearly has some special role to play in this conflict. NO SPOILERS, but the plot plays out from there in a very satisfying way.
The author has made a choice about the narrative that has an upside and a downside. On the upside, our heroine, Twice, (the nickname turns out to be important), has a crisp and distinct, if sometimes quirky, voice. The story is presented entirely in her voice, and the book reads like a diary or letter to you, the reader. This makes the story very immediate. It also infuses everything that happens with Twice's own very appealing personality. Sometimes she's direct and precise, sometimes she's silly or smart mouth, sometimes in the beginning she's a little too "whatever", sometimes she's fearful or confused. That tone of sharing a confidence is hard to pull off, but it works well here and it draws you into the story and allows you to overlook the bump spots in the plot.
The downside is that since Twice is just dropped right into the middle of these strange happenings, and since she starts out confused and behind the curve, that's where the reader starts out as well. You have to be tolerant of ambiguity and willing to figure out what's going on just as Twice figures it out. That can be confusing or frustrating for readers who want a clear plot or who don't like to be kept in the dark or who don't like to wait for explanations of what just happened. I don't mind that, and the author doesn't withhold too much info for too long, so the suspense and confusion didn't bother me; it actually added a bit to the energy and an atmosphere of undefined menace, but that's just me.
So, if you like independent, no-baloney, but still vulnerable heroines, and like parallel world and angry spirit type adventures, written with style, this could be a nice choice.

Wyrd Girl edition by Jon Jacks Children eBooks Reviews
Jacks brings forth a new vision of how our world might work, along with the possibility that ours is linked to another. The Heroine becomes an active focal point between the two worlds just as she is starting to understand how they are linked. I am left wondering where this might go.....
Sorry..I just didn't like this book. I made it to the end because i'd read in one of the reviews that there was a surprise ending twist but it wasn't 'that' much of a surprise and it certainly didn't redeem the book. It was free so I didn't spend any money but I sure wouldn't buy this and probably none of the other books of his either.
I like the premise, and it has a lot of potential. For that I give it four stars. However it was filled with punctuation errors- missing quotation marks for a start, and uncapitalized proper nouns. It was also very muddy and hard to follow in some places. I feel like this wasn't a final draft. Certain ideas and themes needed to be expounded on and some things happened with no background or buildup. Good foundation, but it needs work. It is very unpolished at the moment, punctuation aside.
If done well, I'm okay with first person narrative. This was done well.
If done well, prose written in a "stream of consciousness" style is also okay with me. This also was done well.
The story was fine for the first 75%, but then it took a strange turn that felt rushed. This story could (should?) have been expanded and I would have probably enjoyed it more (and given it a better review).
So, you've got a girl that pretty much everyone considers weird. Turns out she is, of course, weird, especially in that she gets in a situation where she has to deal with living people, dead people, different dimensions and come to terms with just how unusual she is, pretty much all at the same time.
It's a really good book.
Not a bad book really..and it flows quite nicely. Our protagonist is a young girl who finds out that life and death are not all they seem to be. Caught in the middle of some strange happenings she is trying to cope with all the strange goings on. This book is not hard to read going off into places and things that are too unfamiliar. I really don't want to spoil anything by saying anything more but I can recommend this book for it's storyline which while not being too complicated keeps you involved. The kind of book to read without taxing yourself. Falls within the John Saul Dean koontz , Peter Strawb, genre. I could nitpick and say it won't hold up with the best of them, but...for an early effort is quite good.
